Behind the Engagement Framework
Activities are built around an evidence-based engagement model that helps students move from external rewards
to long-lasting intrinsic motivation – the key to building lifelong readers.

Motivation + Engagement = Reading Success
Reading success isn’t driven by external rewards alone. When students are motivated from within, they become more confident, engaged readers who persist through challenges and develop a lasting relationship with reading.
The BRAVE Framework is Literacy Path’s research-based engagement model for cultivating intrinsic motivation
and supporting meaningful, sustained reading growth.
Motivation is the why behind reading: interest, confidence, and purpose. Engagement is the doing: focus, effort, persistence, and time spent reading. Research defines reading engagement as the combined functioning of motivation and cognitive strategies during reading. When these work together, comprehension deepens and outcomes improve.
But this is difficult to achieve in real classrooms: Teachers rarely receive practical models for embedding motivation into daily instruction, and limited time and competing demands make it challenging to respond to individual student needs. The BRAVE Framework bridges that gap.
- The Five Pillars
The Five Pillars of Engagement
Literacy Path organizes motivation into five evidence-based pillars that shape how students experience reading —
together forming the BRAVE model.
The research foundation behind every BRAVE moment
Dr. Peter Afflerbach, PhD
Dr. Peter Afflerbach lays out the research case for why motivation may be the single strongest predictor of reading achievement, and how the five BRAVE pillars develop lifelong readers in Grades 2 to 5.
- In Practice
How Literacy Path Brings BRAVE to Life
The BRAVE Framework is integrated directly into student practice. Brief, intentional moments before, during, and
after reading help Literacy Path understand how students experience reading — not just how they perform.

For Educators
BRAVE shows teachers what test scores can't: motivation. Track it over time. See what drives or limits engagement. When students struggle, BRAVE answers the why.

For Students
Students get timely encouragement that builds confidence, persistence, and a stronger reading identity. The kind that leads to deeper engagement and lasting comprehension.

For Parents
Parents see what motivates their child and what gets in the way. That clarity helps them support reading at home and turn it into a shared family experience.

Behind the BRAVE Framework
Dr. Peter Afflerbach, PhD
BRAVE Research Foundation · Distinguished University Professor
Dr. Afflerbach is one of the foremost authorities on reading comprehension, metacognition, and reading assessment in the United States. His decades of research into how students develop as readers — and what motivates them to become lifelong readers — forms the academic foundation of the BRAVE framework embedded in every Literacy Path interaction.
Why BRAVE Matters
Explore how the BRAVE framework supports educators, students, and parents beyond traditional reading scores.
Helping students become engaged, confident readers isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s the foundation of lasting literacy growth. The BRAVE framework makes that possible at scale, built into every Literacy Path activity, every day.
